Overview
The paperwork says Dingo. Nobody else does. Memphis Motive Works' first quad — and, in 3005, its first venture beyond the Mongoose in a hundred and seventy-five years — emerged from the shadow-war decade as the design bureau's declaration that the company could build more than one thing. Forty tons on four legs, the house 240 driving it to nearly 100 kph, six jump jets throwing it a hundred and eighty meters at a bound, and a single Hellstar PPC for the strike: the engineers, story has it, named it for an old Terran predator out of someone's ancestry. Then the first prototypes ran the Deseret proving ranges — low, long-bodied, four-legged, sprinting across the mineral pans in dazzle trials that banded them rose and copper — and every observer on the plateau said the same word, because there is exactly one thing on Memphis that looks like that and it is not a dingo. The nickname won before the production run cleared the line. The DIN-G01 designation survives on the data plate; the Sanddiver survives everywhere else, and Memphis Motive Works, which knows when it has been overruled by a planet, stopped correcting people around 3010.
Capabilities
The G02 is the common model, and the one where the engineers stopped resisting. Designed after the nickname's victory was total, it commits to the creature: the PPC gives way to a B3M medium laser, a flamer mounts in the head firing from the sculpted 'mouth,' and a Sunglow large laser rides an articulated tail boom — a rear-arc weapon with a sweep no biped can copy, and a silhouette that at dusk, on the pans, has been mistaken for the animal by people who know better. The G02 is the ambusher to the G01's courser: flame for the clinch and the brush, the tail gun for whatever thought following was clever, and the same leaping mobility underneath. The March's aggressors and OPFOR units request it by name, and the name they request is not Dingo.
Deployment
The Sanddiver concentrates where its terrain and its temperament pay: the Deseret ranges and desert garrisons of Memphis, the recon-in-force and flank-hunting elements of the Guards' line regiments, and the aggressor squadrons of the Grenadier and Jabberwocky Schools, where fighting one teaches lessons about lanes and ridgelines that no lecture manages. Units paint their machines in the mineral banding of their home ranges, in the animal's fashion — a rose-banded Sanddiver is from the iron pans, a green one from the copper country, and the 1st Memphis Militia's aggressor flight, with characteristic subtlety, paints theirs in all of them.
History
The Sanddiver predates the Rearmament Edition by a decade and taught it half its tricks: the 240-in-a-light-hull hotrod arithmetic the Hathor would later make famous was proven here first, on legs. Its combat record runs from the Tortuga Campaign's flanking work through two generations of Dominion rotation and Clan-era screening — but its cultural record is the larger one. The Sanddiver is Memphis's 'Mech the way the Mother is Lackland's ocean: the machine on the recruiting posters, the shape in the Founding Day flyover, the toy in every gift shop in Deseret, and the standing proof that the March's engineers, whatever the data plate says, ultimately build what the planet tells them to. The design lead who chose "Dingo" retired full of honors in 3021, and by the account of everyone at the dinner, gave a toast that began: "To the Sanddiver —" and was drowned out by applause before the joke could land, which was the joke.
