Overview
The Ridgeback is a thoroughbred disguised as a draft horse. On paper it looks like a conventional medium workhorse; in practice it is a fast cavalry striker that uses post-Helm Memory Core technology to punch far above its weight class.
Capabilities
The 300 XL engine provides speed normally associated with light 'Mechs, while five jump jets add exceptional tactical mobility. The ER PPC provides long-range punch, backed by six Medium Lasers for close-range devastation. Sixteen double heat sinks keep the design cool under sustained fire.
Deployment
Ridgebacks operate as fast strikers and pursuit units. The combination of speed, jump capability, and firepower allows them to engage targets that heavier 'Mechs cannot catch and lighter 'Mechs cannot survive fighting. "Ridgebacks don't chase — they herd" is TSG doctrine.
History
The Ridgeback was designed by the same team that created the Mongoose, but represents a deliberate exception to Common Heart philosophy. The 300 XL engine and Endo Steel structure require imported components, but the design team argued that certain roles demanded capabilities the Starheart 240 could not provide. TSG command agreed.
